trappa 518
Talking to a lad last night we got on to deer shooting. He reckons that because munties are always in season they arent covered by the "Deer Act something or other" and are therefore legally allowed to be shot with a shotgun. Is he right? Rentomski 0
Nope! They are certainly covered by the Deer Act 1991 and subsequent Orders. Shotguns can only be used, under certain circumstances, where deer are causing or had caused damage to crops, fruit, timber etc on cultivated land or enclosed woodland. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Spot on Rentomski. And even then they need to be shot with a Slug, which you can only have on an FAC with the relevant condition or 450 grains of AAA shot, I believe thats 36g. SS Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Despite the fact Muntjac are classed as vermin, they are also coverd by the 1991 Deer Act and subsequent amendments. It is 100% legal to shoot them with a shotgun but you must use AAA or larger shot! Anything smaller is illegal! No requirement for a slug but if you have one to hand...fine!! But a rifle is still the tool of choice!! PS This does not simply apply to Muntjac...ALL deer! Edited October 12, 2008 by Deker Quote Link to post

I've been doing it a long time, it is my job as well as hobby and it is important to be aware of the legislation as best you can! I know a lot, but I also know I don't know a lot as well, the law is constantly changing and you can never know it all. However, every time you go for a walk with a gun you are controlled by.... Firearms Acts 1968-1997 Anti Social Behaviour Act 2004 Countryside Act 1981 Assorted Game Acts Health & Safety Act 1974 Highways Act 1980 Deer Act 1991 ETC ETC ETC...and all the subsequent amendments to these Acts On top of which the BIBLE..The Home Office Firearms Law Guidance to the Police 2002..it is a guide...but is taken as Gospel by almost all police regions... http://police.homeoffice.gov.uk/publicatio...ms-Guidance.pdf ......some interesting bedtime reading!! It is a serious responsibility walking round the countryside with a gun Quote Link to post

This tells you all about the exceptions and explains why it is legal to use a shotgun!! Always the trouble with the law...you need to read it all not just bits!! Quote Link to post
